A lot of people would like to see marijuana legalized in Canada.
Advocates claim that marijuana is the wonder drug. It supposedly serves as a wicked painkiller for those with terminal illnesses and doesn't harm the average joe that smokes up. They would like to see joints sold at the corner 7-Eleven right beside packs of cigarettes.
Screw that. Does anybody remember that whole cigarettes and lung cancer thing? Heck, after spending millions on
various ad campaigns to get people to quit smoking, now is a great time for the government to say dope is okay!
Anybody that believes marijuana is any healthier than tobacco can go play in traffic. People that smoke marijuana not only do so unfiltered (like a filter does anything anyways) but also hold their breath as long as possible, depriving their brains of oxygen as much as possible.
But it grows in the ground, right? God made it. It's only natural, it can't hurt us! Yes. This is a bullshit argument. A lot of god's creations will kill you. Like the lions that you should be fed to.
So few people smoke in this country we could almost ban it. And we pretty much have already. Where can anybody smoke anymore? It is pretty much restricted to the outdoors and the confines of your own private property. Like marijuana use is.
Now this isn't saying that marijuana and tobacco are any worse than alcohol. The only reason we don't try to ban hard liquor is that it keeps pregnancy rates up.
So, the legalization of marijuana is stupid. But at the same time, the decriminalization of marijuana is a good thing. No more criminal records for potheads. Just fine them, then let them go free, and hope to catch them tomorrow and give them another fine. That way, we still collect the money we would have acquired by taxing the crap out of legalized marijuana, people keep drugs out of the public eye, and we save money by avoiding the courts.
This way, the government still rakes in some cash while not looking like they condone marijuana use, the dopeheads don't go to jail and everyone goes home happy.
Additionally, the government should hook up the seriously ill whatever drugs they want. It's only fair. If I was going to die, I'd want to be higher than a kite too.

leo - We have to capitalize on the marijuana market. In BC, we're making more money on pot than on forestry, even though everyone has to sneak around.
So yeah, legalize that shit, and start up some serious marketing to the states. Sure, they would throw a hissy fit, but in return we could participate in the missile defense.
If BC growers don't have to factor in the risk of getting busted into their operation, we can be undercut everyone else on price.
Ok, that probably wouldn't fly, but at least legalize posession, and decriminalize trafficking. Then you can grow your own couple plants in your backyard for yourself but the dealers still get collected from.
sheldong! fix your fucken comment totals. tim - no Steve - Marry Jane vs. ForestryI seriously doubt BC makes more money off marijuana than forestry. zugekiffter idiot - marry jane vs. forestry 2Well, forestry produces wood produces paper produces money bills.
i cant see how dope might possibly make any money.
or is there any difference in the meaning of "making" and "producing" ;???? Kate - pot issuesWeed makes more money than forestry because the price is artificially inflated. If marijuana is legalized it won't be as profitable an export for those producing it. It will however become more profitable for the government because they can tax it. Right now, tax payers don't make anything on this industry, rather we end up spending money on highly overpriced civil servants who are busting granny's grow op.
On the other hand, the current practice of turning a relatively blind eye to this mild, munchie inducing drug has created secondary issues in BC that our costing us both economically and socially. Mariuana may be one of the if not the highest grossing industry in BC right now, but A) it is creating a mass profit for very few and B) it is creating a drug trade and drug culture that is into a little more than MJ. BC bud is so valuable that is said to trade pound for pound with cocaine and heroine. Well that is mighty impressive. But where is all this cocaine and heroine going? Straight into the downtown east side. tooth - you sure seem to know a lot about the issue, right down to the street trade value. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmm Steve - Weed vs. ForestryNo, I still seriously doubt weed makes more money than forestry. NorskeCanada alone makes BC more money than the film and entertainment industry. Think about that. And NorskeCanada includes only 4 mills and a recyling/de-inking plant.
A tonne of pulp or paper sells for upwards of $500. Now, a typical pulp or paper machine makes about 400 tonnes a day. So, the Elk Falls mill alone is making $1,000,000 worth of product a day, all of which is taxable. That's one Paper mill out of BC. How many pulp/paper/saw mills are there in BC? Too many to count.
How much money does weed make? I don't even want to guess how much money a tonne of weed is worth. But realistically, no grow op in the world will yield hundreds of tonnes of weed. Especially since harvesting happens only a few times a year.
But, just for the sake of argument, lets say that weed sales do happen to equal forestry sales, somehow. All of the forestry sales are taxable, and the revenue goes back to the province. The weed sales are all under the table. The aren't going to help build bridges or pave highways. At best, most of this wealth will be recirculated.
Sorry, but you're wrong. kate - Here you go Steve:Steve - Weed vs. ForestrySo weed is a $4 billion dollar industry?
http://www.fwco. com/northva.html
Forestry was a $5 billion dollar industry in '96. Today, the number is more like $10 billion. w0p - RCMPFor all you pro pot heads out there. Go and tell the families of those four RCMP constables that were killed what you just said and see what they have to say about that. It could go either way but put a little compasion into your thoughts on it. Payday Loans - |
