Think Pie-Menu meets File Browser. Click the image below for more explanation.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|
- You can see the contents of folders a level down
- No clicking involved plus good use of screen space would make folder traversal very fast.
|
- Folder names will have to make some sense
- Directories with lots of subdirectories would force the app to resort to the normal listview.

The general idea behind this "Nifty File Browser" (name may be already used elsewhere) is that you should be able to move about your filesystem as fast as you can kill zombies in video games. Watch an average joe play the latest first person shooter for a few minutes and you'll soon observe that the average video gamer can blow up a million bad guys a hell of a lot faster than he/she can do anything productive with the typical desktop environment.
Potential Enhancements:
- Slightly color each window, with the color to be determined by the majority of filetypes in that folder (for instance, a music folder full of mp3s would have a blue hue associated with it, a folder full of .pdf would have red , or something) To speed up user recognition of directories.
- Go all out and adopt an interface that looks more like a circular pie menu
- Use the numpad with the application, allowing fast mouse-free directory traversal (it would limit subdirs to 7)
